New initiative for a European security and defence policy
Although opinion polls show repeatedly that the large majority of the citizens want a common security and defence policy of the European Union, the EU summit has again declared security policy to remain a responsibility of the member states.
As a reaction, Karl von Wogau, Chairman of the European Parliament's subcommittee on Security and Defence, has started an initiative with the goal of creating common armed forces of the European Union which are able to provide the Union with a real capability of autonomous action.
One of the goals of this private initiative, called European Security Forum, is to establish a close cooperation between the European Parliament and the national parliaments in matters of defence and security and to start a public debate about the advantages of a common European answer to common threats.
If necessary, these plans should be realized by an inner circle of member states.
